Cartridges by Hana

The Hana lineup is brought to you by the Tokyo based Excel corporation.

The Hana name is new, but the track record is long.  Hana's calling card is balance - an even handed presentation across the frequency spectrum.

Hana has been an OEM manufacturer of cartridges for 50 years.  Historically, a few manufacturers have branched out from manufacturing for other companies to launching their own brand.

You may recall cartridges offered under the brands Audioquest (AQ 7000), Monster Cable (Genesis) and Linn (Troika).  These were built by a company named Scan-Tech, which you now know as Lyra.

Some Details ...

To help you decode the naming conventions below, the prefixes "E", "M", and "S" stand for the stylus profile:  Elliptical, Microridge, Shibata.

The "L" and "H" suffixes refer to the output, with the Low output being about .5mv (depending on model), and the High being 2.0mV.

The high output versions are designed to mate with your moving moving magnet phono stage and its 47K input impedance.

On Compliance and Loading

Regarding loading specs for the low output versions, use the recommended numbers below as just that - a guideline.  This is true of any cartridge, and is deserving of a blog post on the topic.

Similarly, treat the dynamic compliance as a guideline.  We've run these cartridges with great success on 9" and 11" Kuzma 4Points, as well as our modified Jelcos.

Galibier Design - Hana Umami Red Cartridge

Umami Red

Classic Japanese design school blending traditional and leading edge and materials and techniques, including ebony, CNC machined, aerospace grade (7000-series) Duralumin, Urushi lacquering, rare-earth magnets, precision-cut diamond, and high-purity copper wires.

The ingredients are 1st rate, and the skill and craftsmanship blends these into something special.

Umami Blue - $2,500

Galibier Design - Hana Umami Blue Cartridge

Umami Blue

Applying lessons learned in the development of the "Red", the Umami Blue is more than its little brother.

A few key differentiators between it and the "Red" include:

  • Alnico magnets vs. the "Red's" samarium cobalt magnets
  • A coil impedance of 8 ohms vs. 6 ohms for the "Red"
  • The "Red's" body is a composite of Duraluminum and Ebony, whereas the Blue has no ebony.

Both cartridges sport a microline stylus mounted to a boron cantilever.

Galibier Design - Hana ML Cartridge

ML and MH

This microridge stylus cartridge comes in two versions:  low (ML) and high (MH) output, with the latter being compatible with your moving magnet phono stage.

The "M" series takes the "S" series cartridge just a bit further, with it's threaded, brass section, for tighter mechanical coupling with your tonearm's headshell, cryogenic treatment, high purity copper, and a nude microline stylus (which more closely matches the cutter head).

Galibier Design - Hana SL Cartridge

SL, SH & SL Mono

Three versions:  low (SL) and high (SH) output and low output mono (SL Mono).

Of course, the high output version, is compatible with your moving magnet phono stage.

A "Golden Ear" award cartridge from TAS, and for good reason.  You could stop here, and forever be happy.

Galibier Design - Hana EL Cartridge

EL and EH

Low and high output stereo versions.  As with all high output versions, the EH is compatible with MM phono stages.

There are some very nice touches in this cartridge, including Alnico magnets and a sophisticated cross coil magnetic circuitry.

If you love the tactile, balanced presentation of the Denon DL 103 and 103R, this cartridge was designed for you.  But then again, balance is characteristic of the entire Hana lineup.
