Guide to Boulder, Colorado
At the risk of your confusing us with the Colorado Department of Tourism, the Boulder area is an ideal departure point for a great family vacation. Boulder is 25 miles from Denver, and serves as the gateway to one of the jewels of the National Park system: Rocky Mountain National Park.
(note: all the following links open in a new window)
Below is a small sampling of activities available in the Denver and Boulder areas.
As a major Western city, Denver’s activities are perhaps more well known than Boulder, with a state of the art Center for the Performing Arts, the Aquarium, The Pepsi Center (Colorado Avalanche, Denver Nuggets), Coors Field (The Rockies), and Mile High Stadium (The Broncos) being located in or near downtown.
The Brown Palace Hotel ( “the unsinkable Molly Brown” fame) is a landmark hotel, much like Boulder’s Boulderado, and it shouldn’t be missed if you’re spending time in Denver.
Rocky Mountain National Park
Located 35 miles Northwest of Boulder, “the Park” (as we affectionately call it) is one of the jewels of the National Park System.
The Auditorium hosts a Spring, Summer music series, and is just South of the University Hill area – at the base of Flagstaff Mountain – a part of Boulder’s extensive open space network.
Rockygrass Bluegrass Festival
Located 12 miles Northwest of Boulder, in Lyons, Colorado, the festival books most of the same acts as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival – being brought to you by the same folks who produce it. The festival is held on the last weekend in of July.
Ski Country USA
We would be remiss if we didn’t include a link to Colorado’s ski areas.

Basic Best Western – conveniently located at 28th Street and Baseline – about a mile from downtown Boulder.
5397 So. Boulder Road, Boulder, CO, 80303
Note: This is about 2 miles East of Boulder – the major East-West road about 1 mile South of Baseline Road. South Boulder Road turns into Table Mesa Drive as you travel West into Boulder.
Too much to mention, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the The Chautauqua Dining Hall – world class cuisine, local organic produce, reasonable prices, and at the foot of Boulder’s Flatirons. It’s the consummate Boulder experience. We make a point of taking visitors here for breakfast. Check on seasonal hours, with reduced hours in the Fall and Winter.
